Event outline

This event allows you to experience rakugo, a traditional Japanese storytelling with a history of over 300 years. A storytelling of comical episodes from Edo period and onwards, told by a performer while expressing the world being told through gestures and use of a fan and hand towel. The event will provide an explanation about the Edo period where the rakugo takes place using virtual reality contents after the rakugo performance. You will also be able to try unique gestures of rakugo using a fan and hand towel. Please enjoy hearing and watching the comical stories of rakugo.

  • Kaishi Katsura

    Katsura Kaishi is the premier performer of Rakugo in English. He was recently awarded the Agency for Cultural Affairs award for Cultural Exchange. He has won numerous prestigious awards for Rakugo, including the NHK Japan National Television Award for Young Artists, the Ministry of Culture Yew Artist Award, The Hanjoutei Yose Theatre Award for Explosive Laughter, and others.

  • Robert Campbell

    Robert Campbell, Ph.D., is a scholar of Japanese literature and the Director-General of the National Institute of Japanese Literature (NIJL), Tokyo.
    His research centers on the sinological literature, art, media and intellectual discourses of late Edo and early Meiji period Japan. Besides editing and contributing to numerous volumes on Japanese literature, art and drama, he is active in the Japanese media as television host, news commentator, newspaper columnist, book reviewer and radio personality.
